Jason Donovan is an Australian actor and singer making his first television appearance at age 11 in 1980 before entering the cast of the Australia’s hugely successful series NEIGHBOURS in 1986 playing ‘Scott Robinson’. The character’s story arc included an onscreen romance and wedding to ‘Charlene Mitchell’ played by Kylie Minogue and helped boost the show’s popularity with British as well as Australian audiences. The show saw Donovan win his first TV Week Logie Award for “Best New Talent” in 1987, and in 1988 he was awarded the Silver Logie for the “Most Popular Actor” on Australian television.
While he was appearing in NEIGHBOURS, Donovan signed a recording contract with Mushroom Records in Australia, and PWL in the UK. His first single, “Nothing Can Divide Us”, was released in 1988. The material was written and produced by the renowned songwriting team Stock Aitken Waterman. The single reached number five in the UK, and featured on his debut album Ten Good Reasons, which was also the highest-selling album in the UK in 1989. Donovan went on to garner 16 Top 40 hit singles in the UK. His music career continued to soar and to date he has sold 13 million records worldwide.
Jason made his defining stage performance as the title character of ‘Joseph’ in the 1991 sold-out 18-month run of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT which also garnered him an Olivier Award nomination, a No.1 single and best-selling soundtrack album. Following this he has gone on to star in the UK in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, THE KING’S SPEECH AND MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET. On television he has featured in I’M A CELEBRITY and STRICTLY COME DANCING, WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, and as a judge on ITV’s SUPERSTAR. Jason also appeared in ITV’s drama ECHO BEACH and MOVING WALLPAPER, Australian film BLOOD OATH, a leading role in the critically acclaimed Australian medical-legal television drama MDA and was last seen on stage in Australia in 2006 in FESTEN at the Melbourne Theatre Company.
Donovan has just completed his JASON DONOVAN & HIS AMAZING MIDLIFE CRISIS TOUR which saw him play 125 shows across the UK and 5 sold out shows at the Edinburgh Festival. He is a co-producer on the new UK tour of PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT and is also about to make a return to the West End stage starring as the ‘Pharaoh’ in the new production of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT.
